Will we screw up another career? posted on 09/27/2008
Millen is gone. Martz is gone. We have a young quarterback behind Kitna. Drew Stanton. In the past and currently, players come to Detroit to either kill their career or never get it going. Top examples of career killers are Rudi Johnson, John Kitna, John Stewart, Scott Mitchell *cough cough* (he was decent in Miami), and Dre Bly.
Examples of players who don't get their career started: Joey Harrington, Roy Williams, Boss Bailey, and possibly Drew Stanton...
Which brings up my topic. Joey Harrington and Drew Stanton. What will become of Stanton? Will he befall the same fate that Harrington was drafted into? Now, I'm not saying that Joey Harrington is a Heisman caliber quarterback anymore (or was he ever really?), but I think it's safe to say that we screwed up his career. He was drafted into a crappy team and throughout his career he had to change systems several time with multiple coaches. Can you really expect a rookie to be able to adjust to all those changes in such a minimal amount of experience at a high level? I really don't think so. He never had an opportunity to develop properly. He doesn't have the luxury that Aaron Rodgers had and Tom Brady had. They could learn a system under a high quality starter, one a legend. We threw Harrington into the battlefield before he could strap up his boots, then we tossed him around with new coaches and subpar offensive lines. He is now scared for life in the NFL and will never be able to make a name for himself.
